IONA JACQUELINE OAKES
A 23-year-old witch with a crystalline right arm. She is the owner of the Midnight Grind, the mysterious, but warm cafe whose door crosses lands and dimensions so that customers from all over can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. Best described as compassionate, optimistic, stubborn, motherly, and enthusiastic in anything she puts her heart into. She gets overly attached and sentimental and has something of a bleeding heart. Iona was the one who stopped the rampaging of Marianna and helped her start over by hiring her as a barista for the Grind.
Her relationship with Monts is that of a good friend and a boss. They'll rib each other every now and then, but they're also in sync when it comes to other topics like boys, cafe foods, and music. Additionally, they balance each other out, with Monts being more calm and serene compared to Iona's excited outbursts. She is invested in Monts' peace of mind and well-being and was quick to refuse to hand her over to a higher council of witches and espers who wanted to eliminate or study her otherwise. Although Iona can be a bit goofy and overly cheerful, she makes surprisingly insightful comments about Monts and her overall character and understands her more than Monts gives her credit for.
OREN
Oren is a 500-year old golem and is the co-owner/manager/baker/cook/barista of the Midnight Grind (so basically, he is capable of everything). He is technically Iona's servant, but she refuses to use that terminology in his case and calls him her partner instead. Oren is loyal to Iona to an extreme degree, second only to his original creator. He was created by Iona's grandmother, a powerful witch who specializes in earth and crystal magicks. Oren is specifically unique for a golem because of his sentience and free will. His appearance is that of a beautiful man with long dark hair and silvery eyes. As Monts jokingly puts it, he is the "sexy lamp" of the Midnight Grind.
He is capable of casting magic spells and is Iona's teacher. Otherwise, he cleans up after her and helps run the cafe and is probably the real reason why it can run so smoothly. Oren is steadfast, wise, and extremely stubborn. Due to a past incident, his speech is clunky and composed of chopped-up sentences. Although he seems overly serious and not as expressive, he has some idiosyncrasies that highlight some of his more amusing habits. For instance, he's a clean freak and perfectionist (which is always thwarted by Iona who is a lot more lackadaisical). If he dislikes an individual or is annoyed, he will be passive-aggressive as hell.
His service skills are impeccable however and he is an excellent cook. Monts finds it boring to tease him and considers it annoying whenever he has to teach her, but she will admit that she's learned a lot.
Ai Thao and Lien Kha
A pair of esper Vietnamese twins (clones technically) who are regulars of the cafe. Ai Thao is sweet, shy, and has a scarily huge appetite to contrast. Lien, while sharp and intelligent, acts silly and immature for the sake of it, but is otherwise rather friendly. Monts gets along with both of them and is particularly fond of Ai Thao who she befriended easily and thinks is absolutely adorable (the other twin, no comment). Both of them volunteer to help out when the Grind needs an extra pair of hands. They're also the first to defend Monts if a customer confronts her about her malevolent aura.
Ai Thao looks up to Monts and sees her as mature and beautiful even though her skin creature is concerning. Lien likes Monts and they tend to exchange playful jabs at each other but she has offered to look into what plagues her body using her connections as a freelance investigator.
ROKURO
(Art Credit: ragi_nx, need source)An insolent and arrogant mizuchi (water dragon) who is Monts' No. 1 regular, or so he likes to boldly claim. Rokuro is considered a powerful deity of water and a young one at that. He thrives in the modernized world unlike his predecessors who lament the state of things and he even actively seeks being above ground and living amongst humans. One can consider him a hedonist who has been corrupted by humankind or a curious observer who will involve himself in matters he finds interesting.
For better or for worse, he finds Monts very interesting.
Rokuro encountered Monts early on when she first started working at the Midnight Grind. He gave her a hard time to the point where Monts, who still had a volatile personality at the time, threatened to kick him out. Her monstrous side revealed itself which was the mizuchi's goal all along. And since Rokuro is a dumbass and horny on main, and absolutely fascinated by Monts' unnatural existence, he asked her to become his wife.
She said no of course.
From then on, Rokuro frequently visits the Grind during Monts' late-night shifts. Although Monts considers him irritating and spoiled, she will also admit that dealing with him made her a lot more patient. He's never gotten angry at her and has given her some valuable insight into being part of the supernatural world. Rokuro, for all his faults, is willing to take risks, accepting of others, and invests his time in drawing people out of their shells. Basically, an irritatingly positive influence.
MAXIM VASILIEV
(Art Credit)Maxim can be considered Monts' second regular. He's from a completely different world with a very harsh environment and culture. In his country, there are six months of spring/summer and six months of winter. The governing body is aristocratic and the royal family is feared as they are respected. Mostly the former. Maxim has yet to open up about the more sordid details of his life in this world aside from the fact that the ruling Emperor's many children are currently hunting horrific creatures that appear during the winter season in order to fight for the throne. He has also neglected to mention that he is one of those royals, the 4th Prince out of ten Royal Children in fact, and he is Very Tired of life.
It was on one of these hunts that he stumbled upon the entrance of the Midnight Grind, a warm oasis in the middle of a wintry hell. Monts was behind the counter at the time and her presence and the whole deal with a magic cafe in the middle of nowhere unsettled Maxim so much, he stabbed her in the chest.
Monts was unharmed (of course) and while that attack nearly got him banned, they sorted things out eventually. Her hospitality and the positive aura of the cafe helped Maxim regain his strength and spirit. It didn't change the fact that Monts was still some kind of terrifying anomaly, not unlike the monsters he's expected to hunt back home, but he acknowledged that she's just minding her own business.
Maxim started visiting the Grind more after that, usually late at night, 15 minutes after 11 PM on the weekends so that he can be specifically be served by Monts. Iona and Oren note that he's closed off if she isn't around and orders less.
He has a dark and mysterious air about him that can only be penetrated by a few people. He's guarded if only because the politics of the palace and being in a huge rivalry with his siblings have shaped him that way. That isn't to say he's a stoic wall of stone. Maxim's got some dark humor, is an avid observer, and sports a particularly ambitious and brutal streak. He had forgotten how to relax until he found the Grind where societal and royal expectations can't follow him. He'll even join in on the weird games and activities the owner makes up if he happens to be around.
There's an odd tension between him and Monts, but she chooses to be playful about it while he flounders about it because he has no idea how to deal with these feelings.
